Opened in 1955, Rollover Pass cut through Bolivar Peninsula to link the Gulf with Rollover Bay and East Bay, improving salinity and fish movement. Its name reaches farther back to sailors, smugglers, and bootleggers rolling barrels across the narrow peninsula to dodge Galveston customs.
Officially, Rollover Pass closed after years of erosion, environmental review, and permitting fights. Around here, many fishermen remember a bigger story beneath the official one: sand loss, sediment buildup, dredging costs, property pressure, and the painful closing of one of the most accessible fishing spots on the Texas coast. The new pier arrived years later as a long-delayed concession to the local fishing community.
